The couple who cook it

Kathmandu Kitchen opened on Bardstown Road in 2017, run by a Nepali couple. The room was a sports bar before that, with pool tables.

One of the owners comes out from the kitchen to thank people for coming in. Two of the three reviews below mention it.

What eating here is like

It is a small dining room. Bring a group and we will push tables together. The quiet stretch is mid-afternoon, between the lunch and dinner services.

Food comes out when it is ready rather than all at once, so momo usually arrive first. Order them to share while the curries are still cooking.

The Indian half and the Nepali half

Nepal sits between India and Tibet and its food shows it. One side of the menu is Indian: biryani, korma, tikka masala, vindaloo, saag, dal makhani.

The other side is Nepali. Momo, steamed or fried or sitting in jhol. Thukpa, a Himalayan noodle soup. Chow mein, cooked the Kathmandu way. Khasi ko masu, goat on the bone. Katar ko tarkari, green jackfruit.

Spice level is yours to set when you order. The kitchen will also cook low-oil, low-salt or low-calorie on request.

What people say

“We had been wanting to try Nepalese food and stopped by on a day trip into Louisville. So worth the stop. Delicious food, great service and good prices.”

Jamie Mann

“I always get the Chicken Chili MoMo as an appetizer then the Chicken Korma with garlic naan. Great appreciative owners always come out and personally thank you for coming in.”

Halal, vegetarian, vegan

Yes to all three, on both halves of the menu.

All the meat is halal, on every dish, and has been since the restaurant opened in 2017.

Vegetarian dishes are marked on the menu. Whole sections are vegetarian throughout: Nepali Vegetarian, Indian Vegetarian, breads, chutneys and sweets.

Vegan, low-oil, low-salt and low-calorie are all things the kitchen will cook, and it sets the spice level to order. Call and ask about a specific dish.
